Topics covered

Origin & history of the game, chessboard & pieces, moving & capturing, pawn, knight, bishop, rook, queen, king, check & checkmate, special moves, how games are won & drawn, relative values, notation, elementary checkmate technique (KRR v/s K & KQ v/s K) and how to start a game.

Aim

To teach the participants the fundamentals of the game in a method that is both instructive and enjoyable.

Validation

Participants will be awarded a Certificate of completion.

What to expect

At the end of the course, the student should be able to play a full game of chess at a fairly advanced level. The student will be expected to perform well in competition with other players. The student would be familiar with a ‘select’ few opening strategies, will be adept at middle game combinations, will be familiar with middle game planning.

Advanced Beginners

Pre-requisites

Knowledge of rules of the game (special moves, how games are won/ drawn etc), familiarity with chess notation & basic opening principles, ability to checkmate a lone king with two rooks and/or a queen.

Topics covered

A review of a few important basic rules, basic mates (KR v/s K & KBB v/s K), converting a big material lead into a win, fool’s mate, scholar’s mate & dealing with it, the elements (force, space & time), introduction to tactical themes (pin, knight fork, double-attack, discovered attack & discovered check, removal of guard).

Aim

To equip the participants with fire-power necessary for competitive chess.
